Robert Fludd (1574-1637)

Robert Fludd was an English philosopher, physician and astrologer. He is best known for his work on alchemy, astrology and mysticism.

The son of a London merchant, Robert Fludd was born in 1574. He was educated at St. John’s College, Oxford, where he studied philosophy, mathematics, and medicine. After graduating, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, studying with various scholars and scientists. During his travels, he became interested in occult sciences, alchemy and astrology.

In 1598, Fludd returned to England and began to practice as a physician. He was sought after for his knowledge and advice on astrology, alchemy and other mysticism. He was a prolific writer and published several books, notably his 1617 work Utriusque Cosmi Historia”. This work was a synthesis of Hermetic and Neo-platonic thought, and sought to explain the relationship between the natural and the divine realms.
