Robert Fludd: An Short Note of His Life and Work

Robert Fludd, also known as Robertus de Fluctibus who was a well-known English physician, alchemist, and mystic. He lived in the early 17th century. His life and work were characterized by a unique blend of scientific research and spiritual exploration. This made him a controversial figure in his time and a fascinating subject of study today.

Fludd was born in 1574 at Milgate House in Kent, England, into a wealthy and influential family. He studied at Oxford University and later traveled to Spain, where he received a medical degree from the University of Barcelona. He returned to England and began his medical career, becoming a respected doctor in London.

Fludd, was extremely interested in alchemy, astrology, and the occult sciences. He believed that the natural world was a reflection of spiritual realities. He wanted to uncover the mysteries of the universe by studying these esoteric disciplines. This belief led him to write extensively on subjects such as the nature of the soul, the structure of the universe, and the relationship between the microcosm and macrocosm.

One of Fludd’s most famous works is the monumental work Utriusque Cosmi, Maioris scilicet et Minoris, metaphysica, physica atque technica Historia” (“Metaphysical, Physical and Technical History of the Two Worlds, That is, the Macro and the Microcosm”).

A multi-volume treatise that attempts to cover all the knowledge of the time. In this work, Fludd combined his medical knowledge with his esoteric beliefs and presented a holistic world view that integrated science, religion and mysticism. In this book, Fludd mentions that the soul is manifested by numbers, as in the works of Plato and Pythagoras. Platonic numbers and Platonic solids have been a very useful mathematical inference to explain the manifestation of the universe. In addition to that he is referring to the Sun giving life to the creation but everything is already enlightened from the inside.

Fludd’s ideas were controversial in his time, and he faced criticism from the scientific community .

Fludd emphasises mostly about which soul is manifested by numbers, as in the works of Plato and Pythagoras and his works had a lasting impact on later thinkers, including Romantic poets and philosophers who were influenced by his mystical approach to the natural world.

Including all of his work that he had done in his time, Fludd’s influence can still be seen today in the fields of alchemy, astrology, and esotericism. His work continues to be studied and discussed by scholars interested in the intersection of science and spirituality.

In conclusion, Robert Fludd was a Renaissance thinker, an author who pushed the boundaries of knowledge to understand the mysteries of the universe. His unique blend of scientific research and spiritual discovery has left a heritage that influences us in today’s world.
