Leone Ebreo as he was known, was a Jewish philosopher. The Dialoghi di Amore is his most important work, and also the most important work on Platonic philosophy since Plotinus. He was the scion of a famous family, that was closely acqainted with the royal courts of Castille, Portugal and Naples.
It is assumed that Leon Ebreo visited Florence and knew Pico della Mirandola and Ficino, among others. Like them he was strongly influenced by Plato. ‘What is love?’ In three dialogues Philo and Sophia discuss all aspects of love: the difference between love and desire, the love of God, love as the universal force that moves everything in the universe, and the origins of love. According to Philo the end of love is pleasure, the union of the lover with the beloved, that has its counterpart in the heavens.
