Jan Amos Comenius (1592-1670)

Comenius was born in Moravia in the Czech lands. Before being exiled from his homeland he belonged to, and was eventually made bishop of, a pre-protestant religious group called the Unity of the Brethren, which had its roots in the circle of Jan Hus (1370-1415). In his exile, Comenius became known as a theologian, philosopher, and most importantly, a pedagogue.

In his novel approach to education, Comenius introduced several important pedagogical developments such as pictorial textbooks written in the native languages instead of Latin. His teaching considered gradual development from simple to complex paramount and it centered on lifelong learning with a heavy focus on logical thinking over dull memorization.

His educational works were translated into several languages during his life and many courts and monarchs desired Comenius to stay with them to reform their educational systems.
