Giordano Bruno (1548-1600)

Giordano Bruno was an Italian Dominican friar, philosopher, mathematician, poet, astrologer, and cosmologist. He is best known for his unorthodox theological views, which led to him being burned at the stake by the Catholic Church. Born in Nola, Italy, Bruno was the son of a soldier. He became a Dominican friar and was sent to study at the monastery of San Domenico Maggiore in Naples. He studied philosophy, mathematics, and astrology and was ordained as a priest in 1572. In 1576, he left the Dominican order and travelled throughout Europe, spending time in France, England, Switzerland, Germany, and Prague. During his travels, he developed his own philosophical system, which combined elements of Neoplatonism, Hermeticism, and various other philosophies. He also wrote several books, including On the Infinite Universe and Worlds and On the Shadows of Ideas.
