Apuleius (c. 125 — c. 180 CE)

Apuleius was a Roman-born Latin author, Platonist philosopher, and rhetorician of Berber origin who is best known for his Latin novel, The Golden Ass. Apuleius was born in Madaura, which is now part of modern-day Algeria. He was born into a wealthy and influential family, which enabled him to receive a good education in both Latin and Greek literature and rhetoric. After studying in Carthage and Athens, Apuleius returned to his home in North Africa. Here he began practicing rhetoric and philosophy, and soon became a popular and successful teacher and speaker.
