Francesco Petrarca was an Italian scholar, poet, and early humanist born on July 20, 1304 in Arezzo, Italy. He is often considered the “father of humanism” and one of the greatest poets of the Italian Renaissance. He was an avid collector of rare books and manuscripts and spent much of his life travelling and studying. He was an influential figure in the development of the literary and artistic culture of the Renaissance. He wrote numerous works in Latin, such as letters, poetry, and an epic poem Africa, as well as works in Italian including the Canzoniere, a collection of love poetry. Petrarch’s works helped to revive interest in the works of classical antiquity and were instrumental in the development of the Italian language. He died on July 19, 1374 in Arquà, Italy.
