Adriaan Koerbagh (1633-1669)

Koerbagh was a Dutch philosopher, theologian, and writer. He is best known for his work Een Bloemhof van allerley lieflijkheyd, gestrooit in verscheyden mengelstoffen, met veelerley gedichten, in Latijn, Neêrduytsch, en Fransch” (A Flower Garden of All Kinds of Loveliness, Strewn in Various Mixtures, with Many Poems, in Latin, Dutch, and French), which was published in 1668. This work was a critical analysis of the Bible and Christianity, and it argued for the use of reason and rationality in religious matters.

Koerbagh’s ideas were considered radical and controversial at the time, and he was arrested in 1668 on charges of blasphemy and atheism. He was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment, and died shortly thereafter.
